"That's UNBECOMING behavior for a young lady."
It was a phrase I heard a lot growing up.
You?
I understand now that this is how they condition us, along with thousands of micro-dosed messages that tell us to stay in our place.
Until now, we have defined our worth (bodies, future, aspirations, opinions, sensuality, and opinions of others) based on a culture and system that was devised for men and by men.
Many of us learned this by watching our own beloved Mothers or caregivers navigate this upside-down world.
They fussed and frowned in front of mirrors about their deepening lines or slackening skin. We knew their power, and yet we witnessed them shrink, hold back their truth, or we felt the backlash of the accumulation of their unresolved generational shame, rage, and resentment. As daughters, it burned in our bellies to watch them take it, and then we learned to do the same.
Have we ever wondered where generations of women learned to:
🧐 Say "Yes" when we meant "No"?
🧐 Say "No" when we meant "Yes"?
🧐 Believe our status, beauty, and age determine our value?
🧐 Distrust or feel threatened by other women?
